Rachel Kempster Barry, Principal
Prior to founding Tuesday Magic, Rachel was the Vice President of Marketing and Publicity for DK Books/PRH. She managed campaigns for DK's Star Wars, LEGO, Smithsonian, Marvel, DC Comics, and Disney-licensed titles including over a dozen New York Times and USA Today bestsellers. Her experience ranges from the children's market (preschool to teen non-fiction) through the adult non-fiction market (from award-winning reference titles like Animal and Fashion to lifestyle and travel guides). Rachel also developed a passion for children's fiction during her time at Scholastic where she worked with a roster
of incredible authors including Suzanne Collins (on her Gregor the Overlander series), Raina Telgemeier (and the launch of Graphix), Jim Benton, and Walter Wick.
One of Rachel's specialties is orchestrating high-impact events at trade and consumer shows, retail, schools, and libraries. In 2012 she created Star Wars Reads, an international reading event now in its sixth year. She's attended and managed dozens of trade and consumer shows from comic cons (San Diego and New York) to Star Wars Celebrations to teacher and librarian conferences to the World Maker Faire. Whatever the budget, Rachel can help conceive and execute events that stick with consumers, build brand loyalty, and sell books.
As the co-author of several books including The Happy Book (Sourcebooks 2009) and This Book is About You (DK 2017), Rachel understands what it feels like to be on both sides of the marketing plan.
Rachel has an M.A. from Brown University in English and American Literature where her specialty was 17th-century women writers. Her reading taste isn't quite that narrow. She's a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, and an active volunteer with community, social, and animal welfare organizations in Northern NJ. She's the recipient of a Penguin Hero Award and a Publishers Weekly Rising Star nominee.
